Forest Synthesis was founded in 2008 by Robert Bryan, MS, LF, a licensed forester and ecologist based in Harpswell, Maine. His education includes a BS in Botany and Environmental Studies and an MS in Forestry from the University of Vermont. In a career of over 25 years Mr. Bryan has worked as a field forester on private woodlands, as an environmental consultant, and 13 years as forest and wetlands habitat ecologist at Maine Audubon where he worked on statewide forest policy issues and applied forest management solutions for private and public land management. Mr. Bryan's professional associations include memberships in the Forest Guild, Society of American Foresters, and the Maine Chapter of the Wildlife Society.
Mr. Bryan specializes in forest management systems that integrate conservation of biological diversity with production of timber and other forest products. Examples of recent and ongoing projects since the formation of Forest Synthesis include:
Working as an FSC™ forest certification auditor in the eastern and central United States
Revising the FSC-US national standards in partnership with other members of the FSC-US Standards Committee
Co-authoring biomass harvest guidelines for Maine
Developing a guidebook for ecologically based forestry in the Northeast
Writing forest management plans for a regional land trust in partnership with the trust's consulting forester
